When you can’t feel your faith

Someone asked me if there ever was a time I feel so dry, I couldn’t feel my faith or God at all.

My answer was a resounding “Yes.”

“But if faith is about feeling, then it would be of less value,” I added.

Having to answer that question reminded me of this:

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.”

-1 John 1:1-4, ESV

I think the ability to remember is one of the greatest gifts that God has bestowed upon man.

I read this and I remember that very day I gave my heart to the Lover of my soul – when all that mattered was the truth of His forgiveness and His grace; when all I can think of was the overwhelming fact that I am loved and accepted despite my flaws and my wickedness. A different kind of joy together with peace that is, up to this day, inexplainable welled up in my heart.

If faith is about feeling and the feeling dies down, then faith dies together with it (and that is just sad).

I think about how unstable our emotions are and how we can easily shift from being all giddy and appreciative of how beautiful life is to being all down and depressed when troubles come. I think about how we can be so sold out that God’s will for us is good, pleasing and perfect and then feel so insecure of what the future holds or feel all uncertain when He asks us to step out in faith. I think about how zealous we can become in ministry when all is going well but are easily tempted to succumb to the temptation of giving up when things get rough or when we don’t feel loved or accepted or appreciated.

If faith is about feeling, then we don’t have enough reason to fight.

I think about the apostles and how they felt years and years after Jesus ascended to heaven – when the church faced persecution; when news of believers getting hunted, imprisoned, flogged, beheaded, and stoned to death were told everywhere.

What was it that made them cling tight to their faith amidst all the hardships?

Aside from the grace that was ever so sufficient, I’d assume it was the memory of the days they spent with Jesus – the One who died for all mankind to be saved – that made fighting for their faith all worth it.

Are we in faith because we are convinced that God is good, or are we in faith only when it feels good?

We first felt our faith when we felt how loved we were despite everything that’s unlovable about us. Could it be that the reason why we’re failing to “feel” because we’ve fixed our gaze on what we think we deserve more than understanding that we don’t deserve anything in the first place?

Whatever you are going through today, I pray that you feel the confidence that the psalmist had when he said:

“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:13-14, NIV

Last Week’s Highlights

There’s too much to write about what happened last week, but I do not have the luxury of time to delve into details. I’m trusting these pictures would do. 🙂

August 8, Thursday

I took a little road trip with Laurize to General Santos City which is a three-hour bus-ride from Davao. The trip served as our time to catch-up (since I'm already based in Manila and she in Davao) but also so we can further forge our connections with our campus ministry in Gen San.

The trip served as our time to catch-up (since I’m already based in Manila and she in Davao) but also so we can further strengthen our connections with our fellow campus ministers there especially now that there are quite a number of high school students who have been reached out and discipled in Gen San who are already studying in Davao for college.

Victory Gen San holds three youth services every week. We attended the Thursday, 5PM service together with around a hundred students and student leaders. It's exciting to see how God is growing our campus ministry in Gen San!

We watched Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters together with the staff and upcoming campus missionaries after the Youth Service. The following day, Ej and Melai took us to the beautiful Club House Kalsangi in Polomolok (about 45-minutes to an hour away from Gen San).

Driving through this road to the club house itself felt like going into Narnia!

Oh, what huge fruits! Club House Kalsangi is actually a huge compound for executives of Dole Philippines. Thank God for connections, we were able to go on a quick day-tour and have brunch there too.

This spot was too beautiful, I couldn't stop myself to have my picture taken with this pine tree-decorated golf course on the background!

This is a huge board of Snakes and Ladders which is similar to the life-size chess board in Marikina. I would've tried playing it if there weren't other people who started playing first!

My Mom and some of the members of her Victory Group have apparently been planning a trip to Buda (that’s about 2 hours and 30 minutes away from Davao City) where one member has a family vacation house. When they learned that I’m home for a few days, they scheduled it last weekend. So, after three hours of being on the bus from Gen San to Davao, I found myself traveling to Buda for another two hours. I wasn’t able to get photos while traveling as it was already dark and a bit foggy while we’re driving.

August 10, Saturday

First thing I did when I woke up in the morning is take a pic with this cute little furball! Seriously, if this puppy were on the floor of a salon, it would easily be mistaken for a pile of hair!

Saturday morning was the only time we got to take a good look around. And man, was the scenery majestic!

So, their family decided to build houses on this mountain and had stairs all the way up!

Also, the family clearly loves colors!

I had to have this picture taken with my Mom at the top of the mountain! I’m so proud she was able to conquer her fear of heights that day. Thanks to the breathtaking view, she forgot she had acrophobia. 🙂

We also found some wild berries. They looked cool so I took a picture.

After having devotions and prayer with everyone, we left Buda at around 12:30 PM. I, then, had to rush to the center to make it in time for the music team rehearsals at five.

August 11, Sunday

On Sunday I got to lead worship for the 8AM, 10AM, and 4PM services at Victory Davao. It was refreshing to work and volunteer with people I’ve served with before. It was equally great to have worked with new ones as well.

There is indeed no better way to end the week than to praise and worship Him for everything that He has done and is yet to do!

“When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?”
– Psalm 8:3-4
