Once upon a time in college, I got introduced to a communication theory.
“The Medium is the Message” is a phrase coined by a literary critic and communication theorist named Marshall McLuhan which suggests that the channels or tools used in communicating largely influences the way the message will be perceived.
A few years after once upon a time, I got to read this verse:
“Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.” -1 Timothy 4:16, NLT
The Gospel is good news. Aside from the fact that the word itself means just that, it IS good news because it is a message that is for the salvation of everyone. While God can use a donkey to communicate His message (see Numbers 22), donkeys are rare in the Philippines and people would have already ran away or fainted before the message has been delivered. I’m sure you’d agree with me if I’d say that the Great Commission having been given to humans is not only a good idea. It’s genius!
Having a good grasp of our role as the medium for His message comes with an understanding that “people who do not read the Bible read Christians;” that while we have to have a good command of the Word, we also have to “keep a close watch on how you live.”
How are you as a medium of His message?
