Hi Dave. Thank’s for sharing that version of the story. If there’s one thing/word/idea that I have come to love so much, it is hope and the saying “This too shall pass.” just gives me enough hope every time something goes wrong.

The version of the story I heard was that there was a king who had a favorite servant. It made the other servants jealous, so the king gave the servant a quest. Go out and find something that would make him happy when he was sad, and sad when he was happy. After years of wandering, the servant sat outside of an old man’s house and began to sob. When the old man asked what was wrong, the servant told him of his task. The Old man gave the servant a ring to take to the king. Engraved on the ring was “this too shall pass.” So remember that when you are happy, cherish it, and when you are sad, have faith that it will get better, because no matter what, everything is temporary. “This too, shall pass.”

Well, I went beyond the setting. The phrase has just become my own motto. I even am thinking of getting myself a ring with that phrase engraved on it. You know, just to remind me every now and then that no matter how things go wrong, there will always be hope. Thanks for the comment!
